Directory Listings
Directories are lists of sites, categorized
and organized by topic. Each directory listing contains short, descriptive information
about the site. The most effective way to drive traffic to a Website, is to get
listed in Directories that specialize in your field. Visitors that come from a directory
are particularly valuable. Each Directory Backlink will also help improve your Search
Engine Rankings.
Good directories require a real person to review your site and add your listing
to the directory. This can take anywhere from a few hours to several years. If you
pay a fee to be listed, you can substantially reduce the time. But beware of Scams.
There are three types of Directories:
Simple Directory
This type of directory allows submission under a particular category. It is called
a "Free for All" (FFA) Directory. Numbers are limited. They delete the oldest listing
to allow yours to be added, so you need to submit your Website every month. The
value of this type of directory is dubious.
A Monitored Directory
These directories are a little more particular about what is listed in their directory
and a human monitors the content. Usually this type of directory lists your site
as it is submitted – if they accept you.
An Edited Directory
In an edited directory, they may completely rewrite the description of your site.
For the person trying to find specific information, this is the most valuable type
of resource.
